and his friend the Earl of Gloucester would hardly qualify as candidates for Father of the Year. They were strong-willed and self-centered men who put their own needs before those of their children. They also played favorites among them with Lear favoring his youngest daughter Cordelia to her older sisters Goneril and Regan and Gloucester having a decided preference for his legitimate son and heir Edgar over Edmund, a bastard spawn conceived during one of his many illicit affairs. The relationships between Lear and Cordelia and Gloucester and Edgar are parallel in many respects beyond favoritism. Both children are subsequently rejected by their fathers and forced to make their own ways without paternal guidance and protection. In the interim, their aging fathers must do some soul searching and growing upon on their own. Finally, the relationships between these characters come full circle with Cordelia and Edgar acting as caregivers for their own parents. They also teach them important life lessons as well. Cordelia was always the apple of Lears eye, much to the considerable annoyance of her older sisters. When Lear decided to retire at the age of 80 and subdivide the property of his kingdom among his daughters, he based what they received upon their effusive speeches to him. Goneril and Regan played along and gave Lear what he wanted to hear, but Cordelia has no interest in indulging in the hypocrisy of her siblings (Bloom 11). She tells her father quite simply, "I love your Majesty / According to my bond; no more nor less... You have begot me, bred me, lovd me; I / Return those duties back as are right fit, / Obey you, love you, and most honor you... Sure I shall never marry like ...
