new century, stands at a crossroads. The ideas that have shaped educational pedagogy in the past are no longer applicable to the multiple stresses and problems that challenge global leaders. Literature indicates that education must establish new paradigms and a new vision in order for humanity, as a whole, rather than individual nation-states, to progress into the future. Literature also indicates that this will not be easy or straightforward. OSullivan (1999) points out that while there is a need for educators to evaluate their objectives in view of historical context, he also describes the "conflicting voices and visions" that attempt to describe and give meaning to this context (OSullivan, 1999, p. 14). It is clear, however, that historically educational goals have been geared to the societal needs and perceived exigencies of a particular society. These needs have largely focused on the need for a population that would conquer new frontiers and provide increases in national productivity through their labor. In contrast to this idea, Dr. Sullivan shows that it is imperative for Western civilization to move away from the idea that humanity must "conquer the earth" and towards the idea of "community with the earth" (Berry, 1999, p. xi). In a similar vein, ecological ideas of community and the web of life are connected to societal paradigms and the need to move away from past behavior patterns of violence, mechanization, social inequalities and war and towards a vision of the world as our shared environment. This line of thinking brings Sullivan (1999) to the subject of political power and societal leverage and the various ways that educators have traditionally interacted with mainstream powers the ways that educators have been utilized to support the societal status quo.
