Since the 1970s, air travel had grown rapidly, but then things slowed around 2001 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2007). This is understandable. September 11, 2001 was devastating for a number of industries but seemed to have a significant effect on airlines in particular. As it respects competition, the "Big Six" are the airlines that compete and it is important to remember that air cargo is another part of this vast industry (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2007). When it comes to personnel, despite monetary problems, staffing is of the utmost importance. Skilled and experienced workers are certainly needed (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2007). Yet, each airline has its particular method of recruiting. Recruitment methods will vary by the type of candidate that is needed to fill a niche. Some recruitment efforts will be made at the high school level (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2007). This may be aligned with high school job fairs or target marketing publications or neighborhoods based on high school population interests. Other jobs requisite special training, and pilots and mechanics for instance need to have a great deal of specific knowledge (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2007). Some pilots are recruited from the military for example because that is where many learn to fly. Today, airlines also prefer that people in high level positions have a college background, and this is true for pilots and flight attendants as well (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2007).
