the recording engineer during a session is to place the microphones on the instruments. During the actual recording, the recording engineers is also very aware of the levels and the quality of the sound from each instrument (Sibley, 2004). The recording engineer is much more aware of "sound" than "music." For example, during a session, two mikes may be placed on the snare drum, one above and one below. An experienced recording engineer explains, "The one (mike) on top records the Pop! sound of the drum, but it does not get the hiss sound that follows. This sound is important, so we use another mike below to catch that" (Sibley, 2004). Generally, theres a mike for the kick drum (bass drum), another for each of the tom drums (as many as six), two more on top of the cymbals, two more for catching the ambient boom of the drums and all these mikes are just for the percussion. Voice talent and other instruments also receive considerable attention. Each mike must be adjusted for placement and the quality of sound (Sibley, 2004). After the sound "mix" is judged correct, the focus turns toward the music. The artists plays and recording engineers make adjustments that enhance the music. Depending on the style of the music and the desired result, high frequency sounds may be enhanced, or it may be the bass frequencies that are deemed more important (Sibley, 2004).
