There has always been security at the airports and in fact thrillers have been based on the possibility that someone could sneak a bomb on board. For example, an old film called Airport revolved around a mans suicide attempt. He wanted to take a plane down just so his wife could collect the insurance money. They were having financial problems. It was a simple plot, but it is not realistic. Ordinarily people know they cannot get away with such insurance scams. However, terrorism is a legitimate threat. Further, there have always been terrorist threats. Waltrip & Williams (2004) explain that "the main priority of aviation security should be to assure that a terrorist event at an airport, terminal or on an airplane is prevented from occurring" (p.28). To that end, a variety of organizations become involved such as unions, the government, security companies, members of the crew and the airlines themselves (Waltrip & Williams, 2004). Although it is true that over the past several years things have changed, concerns linger. In a recent report it is learned that airports are overwhelmed by passenger volume and cannot effectively secure the facilities (McClatchy, 2006). A student writing on this subject might want to address the history of aviation security. What were things like in a pre-9/11 society and how have things changed since then?
