to Robesons desire to break free from the oppressive chains of prejudice. Within the framework of Paul Robeson: Hero Before His Time lies the life changing concerns of survival and
progress, both of which were precarious at best for the likes of Robeson. Clearly, the issue of race was at the forefront of Robesons existence and remained there until
his dying day. Larsen chronicles the events that occurred throughout Robesons life, as he continually moved toward bridging the wide gap that existed between and among the races.
In his young adult years, he became very disillusioned with the manner in which America unjustly addressed all other races that were not white until he reached the point where
he could no longer tolerate the outright prejudice. Robesons travels landed him in the Soviet Union, where there was no sign of the traditional ethnic ignorance that was widespread back
in the United States. Instead, Robeson found a place where people were treated all the same, and no one had to be concerned with skin color or racial heritage.
