In order to understand the effect of rap and hip-hop one has to first understand the meaning behind the words. Perhaps the best definition of hip-hop is that it is "the culture of urban ghettos" (Beau PG). It represents the self-expression of young people whose life is spent primarily on the streets; the music and dance, as well as the specific style of dress, play an integral role in defining their "social attitude" (Beau PG) and status. THE BAD RAP Rap, clearly the "verbal expression" (Beau PG) of those on the street, adds the lyrics to the culture of hip-hop. One conspicuous difference between rap and every other kind of music is that it requires no special musical skill or costly equipment; rather, it relies upon ones raw talent, a standard record player or sound machine. Stemming from the African and Jamaican cultures, rap originated as a way for blacks to "denounce" (Beau PG) their situation with heavy emphasis on the blues and gospel. As rap and hip-hop made their way to the international sector, streets were buzzing with the "breakbeats" (Beau PG) and other natural vocal rhythms. It was not until within the past several years that they took on a negative demeanor and actually started representing the seedier side of life.
