In this sort of presentation one can analyze the meaning of race and culture from many perspectives. For example, one could argue that such an author and such an approach were a subtle way of insisting that the world of man is becoming more and more integrated and race is becoming less and less noticeable. Or, one could argue that the intermixing of so many cultural conditions was nothing more than a complex illustration of how one man is inherently the same as another man for they are all the victims of human nature and the laws of nature. Bearing in mind the fact that there are many perspectives one could take in examining the subtle references to race in Ondaatjes novel we present the following paper which illustrates how the work offers the reader an understanding of the inherent traits of human nature as opposed to the differences seen in cultures. Coming Through Slaughter Ondaatjes novel is one that tells the story of a man in New Orleans. This simple setting is one that truly offers the reader a great deal of material to examine in terms of race and culture. We know that New Orleans is a place that seems to be incredibly intermixed with French individuals, white individuals, and black individuals. It is, in many ways, one of the few places in the country that has created its own culture through a melding of many other cultures.
