What is meant by parallel process in social work supervision? Parallel process is actually something that was discovered in psychotherapy and once known as "reflective space" (Miller, 2004). In such a situation, a therapists supervisor uses feelings projected onto him or her by the therapist as indicators of how the therapist might actually deal with the clients (Miller, 2004). Miller, in an autobiographical account, tells a story of some change in some workshops she was conducting, worry over students and her issues over wanting them to do well in both class and workshops. She notes that her anxiety about her students was directly related to her anxiety about her own problems (Miller, 2004). This came out, before she realized it, as her students not understanding, or "getting it," as she put it (Miller, 2004). When one of her students approached her about concerns of the others, namely that the students themselves felt stuck and out of it, Miller discovered that her own feelings about her colleagues and herself paralleled what the students were experiencing (Miller, 2004). It was so close, in fact, that Miller was finding herself a little too engrossed in the student situations, and she learned that shed responded to the anger in her own situation by trying to push the students in directions they didnt want to go (Miller, 2004). "My anxiety about the work paralleled the students anxiety about the work. The anxiety was so great...it had created a silent void, and both the students and I had responded to filling the void with content, rather than dealing with the anxiety directly," Miller writes on page 387.
