Today, it is accepted as a very effective treatment for mild to moderate depression (Kinrys, Coleman and Rothstein, 2009; Rudra et al., 2009). St. Johns Wort and its components have serotonergic, dopaminergic, and GABAminergic activity acts to decrease corticotrophin-releasing hormone and it also inhibits the reuptake of three enzymes related to anxiety and depression: norepinephrine, serotonin and dopamine (Kinrys, Coleman and Rothstein, 2009). Research has affirmed its efficacy with Generalized Anxiety Disorder when patients took 900-1,800 mg per day (Kinrys, Coleman and Rothstein, 2009). Kava Kava has been used to prepare a beverage in the South Pacific Islands as a relaxant (Kinrys, Coleman and Rothstein, 2009; Rudra et al., 2009). It has anxiolytic and sedative properties. Research has shown that Kava reduces anxiety levels. It stimulates binding of GABA receptors and is believed to affect sodium and calcium voltage-independent channels. However, research has also revealed that Kava can have a negative effect on the liver. This resulted in an FDA warning so even though Kava may reduce anxiety and depression, it is not recommended because of its negative physical impact (Kinrys, Coleman and Rothstein, 2009). Passionflower is another plant that has been used since ancient time because of its sedative and anxiolytic properties (Kinrys, Coleman and Rothstein, 2009). It is sold by itself and as an ingredient in remedies for sleep disorders, for nervous restlessness, for anxiety and for nervous stress.
