Firstly, it is the means by which nearby areas such as Zimbabwe and Zambia have access to electric power; without water diversion, there would be no economically feasible way to power these regions (Jolite, 2003). Moreover, the diversion of water into these areas has grown to sustain an important local industry: commercial fishing, which brings a great deal of revenue to the areas each and every year (Jolite, 2003). There are, however, critical drawbacks to the Kariba Dam project. When the lake created by the water diversion reached maximum level in 1963, 50,000 people form the indigenous Batonga tribe had to be forcibly removed as their native lands were submerged beneath the lake (Jolite, 2003). Additionally, vegetation in the surrounding areas was strip-cleared and burned away in anticipation of inundation, such that the water is rich with chemicals; while this means that crops are abundant for villages near the shores of the lake, the soil in lands further away has been leeched of nutrients, and the people there now suffer great difficulty in growing crops (Jolite, 2003). In China, a growing water crisis has brought about other water diversion projects, most notably the "South to North Water Transfer Project" (Feng & Shi, 2011). In short, the reasoning behind the project is that Beijing and other major urban centers in the north of the country are facing a major decline in available fresh water, and the diversion project would divert water from the comparatively water-rich south to sustain further economic development into the future (Feng & Shi, 2011).
