From its fundamental roots as a constitutional reform movement originally instigated by an assemblage of aristocrats to its ultimate climax that left people fearful of whose hands would ultimately control their beloved homeland, there were a number of variables that served to perpetuate the progression of this heinous battle, not the least of which includes constitutional monarchy, Dantons Reign of Terror and the wind-down that occurred during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte. II. PROGRESSION A. Dantons Committee of Public Safety held tight control as the French Revolution rose to its heights, effectively oppressing all freedom that had heretofore been achieved by moving quickly away from enlightened universalism into the depths of oppression. It was perhaps the first significant opportunity the French had to sever the chains of imprisonment, yet it was that fateful moment when everything slipped away from enlightened humanism and the committee began taking control that French historians say was the massive change from constitutionalism to dictatorship. Also lost was the inspiration of eighteenth century rationalism and great thinkers of the Enlightenment, which ultimately led to a clear indication of twentieth-century totalitarianism that lay ahead (Sachs 253+). B. Georges Jacques Danton had great significance in the French Revolutions Committee of Public Safety; his outstanding leadership afforded him the opportunity to lead his followers and influence opponents.
