How a baby grows during the 9 months of pregnancy : A fetus begins as 2 cells that merge (ovum and sperm), each bearing the genetic contribution of the mother and father. Genetic programming instructs the merged cell to multiple, divide and differentiate itself into the various component parts of the body (Babys development). It takes roughly 266 days (38 weeks) for a baby to develop to the point that he or she can exist outside the mothers body. This period is divided into three trimesters. The first trimester consists of the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. While a pregnancy actually takes roughly 38 weeks, the due date is calculated from the date of the last period (Dileo 21). The delivery date is referred to as the "estimated date of confinement" or (EDC) (Dileo 21). The date of the womans last period is referred to as the LMP. Therefore, the formula for finding the due date of a pregnancy is EDC=(LMP - 3 months)+ 7days (Dileo 21). Within hours after conception, the fertilized egg splits into two identical cells, which then split into four cells (Babys development). This process continues exponentially and by the fourth day after fertilization, the conceptus becomes a group of about 16 to 20 cells, which is than called a "morula, which means "ball of cells" (Babys development). By the fifth day after fertilization, most of the cells of the morula begin moving to one side, which created a bunched up group and a sac of fluid, which the baby will float in (Babys development).
