These events can include military combat; violent personal assaults, such as rape or mugging; accidents; natural or human-caused disasters; child abuse; domestic violence in the home; witnessing these kind of violent acts and a host of other events. The key is that the individual felt severely threatened during or as a result of the event. Individuals who are suffering from PTSD relive the threatening events over and over again, through nightmares, flashback episodes and natural memories. In fact, if the person is exposed to something even remotely similar to the event, they will suffer an episode. Anniversaries of the event are especially liable to trigger symptoms. Symptoms include depression, anxiety, sleep disturbances, emotional numbness, irritability and anger outbursts. Those affected can also experience intense guilt, especially if the event took lives of others. Symptoms must last more than one month for PTSD to be diagnosed (National Institute of Mental Health, 2001). Those student planning to enter the education profession need to be aware of the disorder, what can cause it and the symptoms because many children in todays society live with domestic violence. Too often, children and adolescents are witnesses or victims of violence in the home and/or in the community. An understanding of this condition will help the educator to help the child. Research has found that children and adolescents have a range of reactions and PTSD will be manifested through those reactions, including, withdrawal, anger, fear and depression. They may even lose trust in the adults around them. Elementary age children, especially younger ones, may regress to toddler kinds of behaviors, even bedwetting.
