My mother, a driving force in my life, convinced me that anything was possible; that even in the presence of considerable conflict; I could achieve my personal and career goals. One of the factors that has impacted both my life and my academic performance has been my familys economic and social struggles. My father left our home early in my childhood as a result of drug and alcohol abuse and my mother raised me and my younger sister as a single parent. My mothers strength came in large part from her participation in our community church and this was a source of considerable strength for the three of us. Since my childhood, I have been active participant in our church and have volunteered my time to community-based church outreach and church programs that improve the community. These opportunities not only helped me recognize the value of community-based work, but also showed me some of the issues and conflicts that result from the inability of the legal profession to adequately meet the needs of minority communities. My home community is Freeport, Long Island, NY, a diverse community that has a large minority population. Freeport is a community that has been negatively affected by drugs and gang violence. As a teenager, I watched my peers make poor choices, commit crimes and experience the negative impacts of the law, while rarely seeing the help that the law could provide. I watched friends who were accused of wrong doings and also realized that the lack of adequate legal representation often meant that these people ended up with criminal records that would follow them ...
