However, while nurses share this commonality, it is also that the philosophy that individuals bring to an activity or a social interaction naturally affects the way in which that situation is perceived and how it is conducted. Therefore, the following discussion offers a nursing student a guide for considering her/his personal nursing philosophy. Within the context of the nursing profession, the term "philosophy" can be understood as a critical analysis of the basic concepts and beliefs that are held by nurses in regards to professional practice. For example, the philosophy of empowerment that is described by Stevenson, Leamy and Barker (2000) perceives both the nurse and the patient as bringing significant capabilities and knowledge to their interactions. This philosophy acknowledges that clients are experts in regards to their own lives and, therefore, it is the nurses job to enhance, facilitate and enable the patients capacity for self-care in promoting the healing process (Stevenson, Leamy and Barker, 2000). The reasons why individuals choose nursing as a profession entail the desire of that person to serve others, to find meaning in their lives from contributing worthwhile service to society and their communities. While issues of self-interest naturally enter into this equation, such as an attitude for science and the availability of educational opportunities, and the need for nurses in the job market, a the heart of a nurses motivation is the internal desire to be of service to others, as there are far easier and often more lucrative ways to earn a living.
