Chin1 wrote the book is to examine his life for clues. Virtually all the sources that discuss his book say that it is autobiographical. A website called "Cultural China" discusses what it calls "Chinese literary icons" and has this to say about the book and its author: "The first nineteen years of Pa Jins life were spent, with a short interruption, in the large family mansion in Chengdu, a household consisting of fifty Li family members and their forty-five servants, ruled autocratically by his grandfather... this family, which he called a despotic kingdom."2 Ba Jin said that he did not write himself into the novel, though he is fond of one of the characters, Chueh-hui, the youngest of the three brothers who are at the center of the novel.3 There is always a danger of an author inserting himself into his works; Edgar Allen Poe is always confused with his narrators. Here, though, Ba Jin is clearly not a character in the book, though he based it on his early life. What then is his purpose? The only logical answer is that he wanted to write about what his life was like to extrapolate from the specific to the general: this is what life is like for the members of this family and their servants; by extension, this is what life is like for similar families all over China. Qualifications: Ba Jin is the penname of a man born November 25, 1904, known variously as Li Yaotang or Li Feingan; he is widely considered to be "one of the most important and widely read amongst Chinese writers of the twentieth century."4 He took his penname from the first syllables of two "Russian anarchists Bakunin and Kropotkin" and started writing in the late 1920s."5 Since he admired them enough to ...
