For example, because we are blind to one thing, such as the truth in regards to a loved one, this does not mean that our other sense are not trying to compensate for our subtle blindness and provide us the truth through other sense. Such is likely the case with many Shakespeare characters, who are often blind to some truth in their lives. Bearing this in mind we present the following paper which examines such blindness and compensation in the stories of Othello, King Lear, and Gloucester. Othello When we read the story of Othello we see that he is truly, and perhaps almost ultimately, blind in many areas. He is blind with love in the beginning, a love that is truth. He then becomes blind to Iago who is nothing but destructive. And, he is ultimately blinded by jealousy and rage. In these respects it would be easier to say that Othellos senses were all working against him to show him false truths. yet, at the same time, he constantly seems to be doubting the rage, the trusting of Iago, and the jealousy. His inherent nature does not want him to believe such lies. We see this throughout the story as he is constantly confused and dismayed at what he is being told and what he sees. In better understanding this we have only to look at an experience we have all had. We have all seen a time in our lives when we were incredibly confused by those around us, getting different stories and different versions of stories, not knowing who, or what, to believe. And, for the most part, dont we come away in the end understanding ...
