Following the Gulf War, Iraqi troops attacked Kurdish villages in northern Iraq. The aggression was in retaliation for the Kurds' support of UN forces during the war. Hundreds of thousands of Kurds fled for their lives, flooding the borders of Turkey and Iran. The UN implemented Operation Provide Comfort to provide relief for the refugees.
