Oceanography ranges from exploring the ocean floor at the greatest depths to the prediction of high and low tides on the worlds coasts (Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory, 2000). Oceanographers are scientists
who apply chemistry, biology, physics and geology to the study of oceans, to their currents, tides and circulation, to the creatures who live in the seas, to the rocks that
lie one the oceans floors and to the places where the ocean meets the coast and the atmosphere (Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory, 2000). These ocean scientists obtain data from the artificial
earths satellites, conduct laboratory experiments, take measurements and samples at the ocean, analyze data and perform simulations of ocean phenomena with numerical models on computers (Texas A&M University, 2000). There
are different subfields of oceanography that include: * Physical oceanographers emphasize water masses and currents of the ocean, how the water masses are formed and the driving forces that energize
and shape the waters motion as currents or undulating waves. * Chemical oceanographers look at the distribution of chemical compounds and the chemical interactions that occur in the ocean
and on the ocean floor. They also study the interactions between and among the suns energy, atmospheric compounds, dissolved and suspended oceanic organic and inorganic materials, sea life and the
sea floor. These scientists also investigate the impact on oceanic chemistry of both natural substances and man-made materials. * Biological oceanographers investigate the different diverse forms of life in the
sea and the patterns that exist in their population densities. * Geological and geophysical oceanographers investigate the shape and material on the ocean floor (Texas A&M University, 2000, htm).
