Basically, this suggests that human beings can improve quality of life from participating in what could be classified as "meaningful occupations" (Hammell, 2009). This can range from grave-digging to being the CEO of a multinational corporation. But what, exactly, does this mean? It means that humans, by their very nature, are occupationally oriented. They cant just sit around and be satisfied. Even the couch potato must be watching television, snarfing chips and drinking beer for satisfaction. This is why, in fact, people get restless if theyre on vacation for too long - they want to be doing something occupationally related - even if its grubbing around in a backyard garden. This is also why older men sometimes become so irritable after their retirement. They have gone from being busy, occupied and in demand, to doing nothing. They end up taking out their restlessness on their loved ones (which is why there are so many letters to advice columnists regarding interfering men who have just retired from their jobs). Humans have always sought ways to be occupied, even during the cave days. There were definite tasks (hunters, gathers, child-rearing), and everyone understood their responsibilities. Even in agrarian times, there was a task for everyone to do - and people were well occupied. As we moved into the industrial age, however, the key goal seemed to involve more leisure and less work. People moved into urban areas, forsaking the seven-day work weeks that were common of farm life.
