hilarious predicaments that makeup the comedic elements of the movie, but which is actually quite healthy. The narrative revolves around the fact that Clark Griswold, the father of the family,
is planning an ideal family Christmas, just as his father did when he was a boy. Clark is married to Ellen, and they have two teenage children, Audrey (16 years
old) and Rusty (14). However, Clarks plans deteriorate due to the interactions of his extended family, including both sets of grandparents, as well as miscellaneous other relatives. Clarks parents
are one of the first to arrive and this spurs Clark to follow the family tradition of illuminating the home with Christmas decorations. Clark over does it, however, by using
so many lights that it causes the local power stations backup generators to have to kick in. Then, Ellens cousins, Eddie and Catherine arrive in their rusty RV and their
children and setup camp in the Griswolds driveway. The oldest members of the Griswold clan, Uncle Lewis and Aunt Bethany, arrive on Christmas Eve. Uncle Lewis burns down the family
Christmas tree, forcing Clark to find a replacement, which he takes from their yard. It still has a squirrel in it, which causes more havoc. Clarks Christmas bonus does not
come through, which sends him over the edge, kidnapping his boss; however, the boss comes through with the bonus, all conflicts are resolved and the film ends happily, just as
Uncle Lewis cigar ignites the gas, which is seeping from the street drain caused by Eddie dumping the contents of their RV port-a-potty into it. This propels a lawn Santa
ornament skyward, which as the entire Griswold family observes this weird, but strangely touching sight, and Clark comes to the realization that his dream of a perfect family Christmas came
