Just because some things are natural does not mean they are not dangerous. Earthquakes, which are natural occurrences, kill hundreds if not thousands of people and ruin homes, cause destruction to cities and can have lasting impacts on the livelihood of entire communities. Though the Earths energy is essential to the movement of the planet, its orbit and the necessary structure of a planet supporting human and animal life, the energy in the planet can also serve to move tectonic plates, often causing a ripple effect of energy that can have devastating consequences. Earth quakes are often referenced in terms of the energy of the early and the movement of tectonic plates, often relating plate boundaries as the "hot spots" for seismic activity. While the Earth may appear to be relatively stable to most people, it is in a constant state of motion with the core of the Earth creating a considerable amount of heat (energy) that must be moved from the center to the outside through the movement of the plates. Hot magma rises then cools off when it hits the air, and subsequently moves the plates and all those above it (Trefil & Hazen, 2006). The areas of the greatest level of seismic activity are generally located around areas of plate shifting, where one plate may move beneath another, resulting in the pushing of parts of the plate on top upwards. This can result in the formation of mountain ranges under the water or the even significant shifts in the ...
