As this suggests, these musicians are extremely talented and quite capable of achieving the super-stardom that is usually presumed to be the ultimate goal of musical career. However, this group has been categorically unwilling throughout the bands long career to make the compromises that are necessary to achieve such success. To quote a clich?, they "march to a different drummer," and prize their individuality and musicianship above material gain. Arguably, this attitude can be traced to their roots, which lie in the heart of the Hudson River Valley and Saugerties, NY. The band formed in Miami in 1967 when Terry Adams and Joey Spampinato found that they had a "fire for the same things" (Prescott, 2003, p. K7093). Their early experiences with major record labels left them disenchanted with the music industry. Johnny Spampinato comments, "Id go crazy if we had to play the same thing every night" (Prescott, 2003, p. K7093). NRBQ has opened many times for Elvis Costello, who comments that "To become successful, particularly in America, you must do the same thing over and over and over again" and NRBQ categorically refuses to do this (Prescott, 2003, p. K7093). Like any band that has endured for over three decades, NRBQ has gone through occasion changes in their makeup. Guitarist Al Anderson left the band for a more settled lifestyle as a singer/songwriter in Nashville (Bessman, 1999).
