save his familys pasta business. This paper discusses the ideological themes that Diana Engel explores in her childrens book, Gino Badino. Discussion The story is simple but heart-warming. Gino and his family are pasta-makers who run their own business, Badino Pasta; they are also mice. Ginos job is to sweep out the factory each evening, a task that bores him and that he hates (Opocensky). Because he is so bored, he spends a lot of his time making little animals out of the discarded chunks of pasta dough that he finds on the factory floor (Opocensky). He leaves these creations everywhere (Opocensky). One night, he overhears his family discussing their problems: it seems that the business is failing; like all small companies, it is facing tough competition and may not survive (Opocensky). He decides to try and help, but only succeeds in making a huge and confusing mess, which has all the makings of a disaster: "his macaroni mice are shipped to stores" (Opocensky). But customers are not offended or upset; instead they are delighted with Ginos macaroni sculptures, sales soar, and the little pasta-making company is saved (Opocensky). The book is done with watercolor illustrations but the colors are subdued rather than saturated; the cover is a dark hunter green with a scalloped red border top and bottom; in the center is a square, also rimmed in red, so that the whole thing resembles a picture frame. And in that frame is Gino-hes wearing a red-and-white striped shirt and holding out a tray of pasta. He is clearly a mouse, that is, he has the head of a mouse although his body is that of a human boy. The whole family of course is portrayed the same way.
