but also the technical developments of the time and the materials available. Until recently the use of the term modern, and the associated modernism would relate to something of that time. The term modern has been used for many centuries, it is even used by Cennino Cennini in 1437 when he describes Giotto as making painting modern (Cennini, 1933). There is also the term modern used by many of the renaissance artists when describing their own work (Gablik, 1986). In historical terms when looking at art and design modernism, although having once applied to anything of the contemporary time, how applies to a period between the 1860s and the 1970s (Gablik, 1986). The term refers to the artistic ideals of this time, however, the term modernism is also used when reefing to something as being of the modern time and refers to modern art. Modernity has a cross over, but this can be seen as positive acknowledgment of ones own time. The meaning is to be aware of the differences between the current time and those that went before, but this does not devalue the previous times and styles. Nor does it need to be seen as an opposition to the past, and as such it is the concept of originality that gains meaning by its contrast to the past. It is also with noting that we cannot attribute deconstruction or amnesia to the term modernity as this cannot be defined as original, new or innovative, against something that is ignored, forgotten or destroyed.
