Council is correct in its concern for the future of the Cypress Cove beaches and to seek now means of slowing the natural process of beach erosion. It is
the nature of the shoreline to change over time; beachfront development combined with a high degree of foot traffic can and do exacerbate the problem for homeowners, beach visitors and
long-term residents. A preliminary portion of the study seeking for solution to Cypress Coves concerns necessarily must begin with assessment of the nature
of the coastline; how Cypress Cove came to its present conditions; and likely results for the future if Cypress Cove chooses to continue on its present course. The Problem of
Development Intellectually, we know that "When surf pounds and currents sweep against coastlines, erosion is inevitable" (Houses on the sand, 2005; p. 4).
It is the nature of the shoreline to change over time, as the ocean removes sand from one location and deposits it in another, often on a seasonal cycle.
The problem for people and development arises when sand leaves without later being replenished in the natural system (Minutes, 2000). Human influence
and development often clashes with the progress of natural systems. In the end, the ocean will not be changed, it will choose the course it chooses. This does
not mean that Cypress Cove is helpless in the face of those changes, however. Origins of Current Problems Without education, owners of beachfront
