Crime scenes involving missing individuals are particularly critical in regard to evidence collection and processing because lives could actually be saved if the puzzle that has been left behind is put together quickly, efficiently, and accurately. Consider, for example, a scenario involving a missing twenty-two year old college student, Susan Jeffries. Jeffries roommate, Danni Olson, has reported her missing after staying the night with friends and attending class that morning she came home to find the residence out of order. Olson last saw Jeffries the previous evening around 7:20 pm. Olson reports that Jeffries was not present for a final exam in their morning class and that the instructor had told Olson she had not been contacted by Jeffries. There are several key facts that must be kept in mind when providing a rationale for evidence collection and processing. First, three individuals live in the residence in question. In addition to Jeffries and Olson, there is a third roommate. That roommate is Shelby Cheppers and Olson has reported that neither her nor Jeffries get along with Cheppers very well. According to Olson, Cheppers left for winter break with family after completing her final exams the previous afternoon around 2:00. There are, of course, other individuals that could be relevant in this case. The first task at hand, however, is quickly assessing the scene and trying to discern the best approach to resolving the whereabouts of Jeffries.
