89.2% (2004) of attorneys are white as well. While one would expect minority groups to be in the minority--obviously, the majority should make up the bulk of any population--it is problematic in the legal system. In part, this is because many minorities are found as part of that system. More minorities are in jail and participate in the criminal justice system. It might make a difference if more racial minorities made up the attorney population. Such attorneys might be more sympathetic to the plight of their clients and the clients might feel more comfortable with someone more like themselves. In some cases however it might not make any difference. When trying to discern just why there are disproportionately more white lawyers and judges in the justice system, a broad look at society is in order. Generally, the upper echelon is white and many people of privilege go to the finest colleges and go on to law school. They can afford it. Many minorities are poor, and although that is not true for every one who is not in the majority, generally speaking, this is the case. Therefore, although there are set asides and scholarships for minorities, they have fewer life chances than those in the privileged classes. Thus, it is more likely than not that those who have greater power and means in society will be better educated in their earlier years. They may have had private tutors or given a private school education. They might have been pushed more by parents and are more likely to come from two parent homes, or at least homes where someone is present during the school day.
