Many improvements have been made in recent years, however. Supplying the Army Supply chains in the private sector are unidirectional, moving from one supplier to another until they ultimately reach the end user. This pattern exists in the military too, but then many of those same supplies travel back through the supply chain to warehousing facilities, other units or other destinations. The Army both uses and experiments with anticipatory supply chain management (Lenzini, n.d.). As example, an order for troops to be deployed into a new area also triggers supply efforts based on the needs that the organization knows will exist for that group. Individual unit-level commanders are not required to list and request every individual need that the group will have; neither are they required to wait for those goods and supplies to arrive at some future date while the unit goes without needed items. Rather, an order sending troops to a new area initiates "automatic" supply chain activities that will ensure that the end customer (the soldier) has the supplies and equipment that s/he needs to accomplish the assigned mission. As troop presence is removed from or increased in a specific area, the same supply mechanisms come into play, and in the direction required to meet specific purposes.
