In order to formulate an advancement system that is predicated on performance, a healthcare institution must develop the necessary evaluation tools that will serve to summarize the crucial "behaviors and outcomes reflective of key nursing functions" (OHara, et al, 2003, p. 512). Miami Valley has achieved this goal through its superlative organizational management system. Healthcare facilities in todays high-pressure, competitive environment are continuously challenged by the need to provide a working environment for nurses that is conducive to job satisfaction and professional growth (Barnes, et al, 1999). Miami Valley has addressed this need by thoroughly evaluating its system in regards to clinical nurses and by formulating a developmental evaluation process (Barnes, et al, 1999). The result of these efforts has produced "an objective position description" that outlines the "global responsibilities of a nurse," as well as "unit-specific assessment of performance" (Barnes, et al, 1999, p. 25). This system has resulted in formulating a working environment in which nurses are encouraged in their professional development to an extraordinary degree (Barnes, et al, 1999).
