There is nothing particularly notable about the appearance of these characters, so virtually any actor could be cast in these roles. The implication of the play, however, is that Open Heart is a middle-aged man, as Death promises him only forty more years of life and this is deemed a gracious plenty within the context of the play. 3. CHARACTER RELATIONSHIPS Open Heart and Steadfast Faith are man and wife. The remaining players have no relationship to each other. 4. UNIQUE FACTORS God, Death and the Devil are supernatural. 5. PROTAGONISTS Open Heart and Steadfast Faith 6. OPENING STASIS Open Heart, a good peasant, is inordinately depressed because the family goat, and its calf, has drowned in a ditch ("Apple Tree" 451). Furthermore, their lamb has been by a wolf and their goose stuck its head in a barrel of bran and choked to death ("Apple Tree" 451). Open Heart bemoans their fate, but Steadfast Faith, his wife, points out that God will not forget them and that they still have their apple tree. 7. INTRUSION God hears the prayers of these devoted people and agrees to make their apple tree bountiful throughout the year and also that anyone who climbs it with the intention of stealing their apples will find himself stuck fast to the tree until Open Heart releases them ("Apple Tree" 453). God agrees. 8. ACTIONS The negative consequences of losing their goat, limb and goose causes Open Heart to bemoan his fate, which leads to Steadfast Faith insisting that their remain steadfast in their faith and praising God.
