Our social constructs of gender are impacted by a number of factors. One of the more insidious of these factors is the media. To some degree, our contemporary ideas of gender are constructed in, by, and through media representations. Children, in particular, are susceptible to the influence of the media in shaping their ideas of gender. These ideas are then put into play in various aspects of our culture, our society, our economy, and our individual lives. In some respects the influence of the media on our social constructs of gender have been positive. Some media depictions, for example, show women in equal roles to men in the occupational arena. The impacts of such depictions are more positive than negative. At the same time, however, our ideas of gender are diluted as we observe women and men who do not fit the stereotypical gender roles in any respect. Often times the media touches on subjects which are considered taboo by large segments of a population. One has to only watch the commercials during prime time to see such subjects as homosexuality, bisexuality, transvestitism, and transgenderism. These are concepts that run counter to our mainstream societal constructs of gender yet they are becoming more and more common. Those depictions of gender that run counter to mainstream ideology are portrayed in a light that would have been considered socially taboo only a few years ago by practically everyone and that is still today considered inappropriate to large segments of the population.
