The student searching for illuminating Chinese American literature can not go wrong in choosing the author Maxine Hong Kingston. Kingston has produced numerous works of note. Among these are "China Man" and "Woman Warrior: Memoirs of a Childhood Among Ghosts". These books are essentially chronicles of the many lives which intertwined with Kingstons. They illustrate not only her mother and father but also the predecessors from whom her ancestors originated. Sometimes criticized for portraying a Chinese experience which is not completely grounded in fact, Kingston argues that her intent is not to portray the Chinese experience or even the Chinese American experience but to portray the experiences of those closest to her, her family and indeed herself. The student should strive to come to the realization that both of these books, in fact, share the common purpose of illuminating immigrant Chinese culture and life. They do so in a style which we are not quite accustomed to but in a style which is uniquely Kingston. The student should pursue these works with the understanding that Kingstons style is not meant to mislead the reader nor to convey false information. Instead her style is meant to expose the reader to cultural considerations in a manner which few readers have managed to achieve. Of these two books, "China Man" is most frequently perceived by student and critic alike as the most controversial. This book has even been denounced as confusing elements of Chinese culture.
