traces how man begins life as infant, "Mewling and puking in the nurses arms" ends life in much the same manner, "Sand teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything" (Shakespeare). In Guy de Maupassants short story "Minuet," there is a similar view of old age as a period of decay and decrepitude, but there is also a sense of nobility and terrible sadness to the spectacle of abilities and skills being lost with age. The narrator of "Minuet" tells the story when he is fifty and facing his own old age in the not too distant future. He recounts that when he was young, he liked to walk in the early morning in the nursery garden of the Luxembourg. From the beginning of the story, the reader gets hints that the narrator has always found the elderly to be charming. He describes the garden as being "pretty as the gentle smile of an old lady" (Maupassant). The narrator becomes intrigued by a little old man who also walked in the early morning. He spies the old man going through the most "remarkable motions," as the elderly gentleman dances in the garden when he thinks no one is looking. The narrator finds the sight of the old man, "twisting his poor little puppet-like body" to be rather pathetic and ridiculous. Nevertheless, he is intrigued and he becomes "wildly anxious" to speak with the old gentleman. One morning, he does and they soon become acquainted. The old man was a dancing master at the opera during the time of Louis XV. He was obviously was a successful artist in his day, with souvenirs from notable personages, such as the Comte de Clemont. He tells the young narrator how the garden keeps himself and his wife in touch with memories ...
