The author will propose a different definition, as well as examine those given by these authors. The Awakening - Kate Chopin (1899) Edna, the major character of Chopins novella, informs her father than she will not be attending her sisters wedding , claiming that "a wedding is one of the most lamentable spectacles on earth." Edna, the wife of a prominent banker, twelve years her senior, and mother of two children, does not arrive at her comment lightly. At the turn of the century, Edna appears to have everything that a woman could ideally want, including a cook and a nurse for the children - and -- she isnt happy. Is this the stuff of current soap operas, a hundred years ahead of its time? Not quite. We witness, as out title suggests, a women coming to her senses, of "her place" in society. It is not a "bad place:" the "season" in New Orleans, and summers at the shore. But she does begin to notice the details of her life that she used to overlook, such as returning home, windblown and sunburned, and discovering her husband, "looking at her as though she were a prize vase, which had now been damaged." Edna explores the lives of her neighbors, is charmed by a young Creole who "courts" her gallantly, and learns to swim. "She walked out. The water was chill, but she walked on.
