Afghani and Iranian Shiite Muslims allow temporary marriages under some circumstances, this union is considered to be permanent and in most cases involves not only a living arrangement but also a recognized social structure in which children are produced and reared. A few cultures allow a man to take more than one wife. In some cultures extramarital associations were allowed as well. The ancient Hebrews and more recently the Arabs and Chinese, for example, allowed the men to take concubines but these arrangements were not viewed with the same social acceptability as is the marriage itself. When one discusses the concept of marriage and the social dictates regarding it is necessary to speak not only of geographic location but also of the concerned individuals culture or religion. Another often overlooked factor in how society views marriage is time period. In France, for example, choices as fundamental as marriage which would have been almost strict requirement in the seventeenth century began to be an option in the eighteenth century. Many women defied the status quo of the seventeenth century and chose to remain single simply because they wanted to remain single (Adams, 1996). This was true at different time periods in numerous cultures and geographic areas.
