France). The following discussion of Marie de Frances lais will examine the literary elements in her poetry and how its significance as to what this body of work tells the
modern day reader about womens lives during the Middle Ages. First of all, it is interesting to note that in her Lais, Marie pictures all her heroines, who are
all noble and beautiful, as being able to read and write. This may have been an indication of the educational opportunities that were available to aristocratic women, or it may
have been included simply as a necessary literary device that aided Marie in recounting the conditions necessary for an illicit love affair, which is the problem that forms the crux
many of these narratives (Williams 74). Regardless of this issue, the picture that emerges from Maries narratives is one that shows medieval women who are determined to make the
