The student researching lunar eclipses should understand that because such events are relatively rare, they still hold a special fascination, even in the relatively enlightened world of the 21st century. And yet, the reasons behind how and why they take place are generally not known by the average person. Yes, that average Joe may understand that the way the moon, Earth, and sun line up causes a shadow to pass across the face of the moon but why does it happen? And why doesnt happen more often? These are the sorts of questions the student will want to answer for his or her readers in their report. The "Mechanics" of a Lunar Eclipse To explain the phenomenon in the most simplistic of terms, an encyclopedic reference will read: "A lunar eclipse occurs when the earth is between the sun and the moon and its shadow darkens the moon" (Encarta). That is already understood. The actual reason for the event occurring is related to the shape of the shadow cast by the Earth because of the sun and at what point light is completely obscured. Referring again to Encarta and the article on eclipses contributed by Hess (1994) the explanation is that Earths shadow is long and conical and that: "Surrounding the shadow cone, also called the umbra, is an area of partial shadow called the penumbra. The approximate mean length of the umbra is 857,000 miles; at a distance of 239,000 miles, the mean distance of the moon from the earth, it has a diameter of about 5700 miles" (PG). Ryback ...
