A revolution has occurred over the last twenty-five years in regards to graphic art and the way it is produced. Today, its possible for practically any business, no matter how small, or any independent artist to produce high quality graphic art that rivals the work produced by big business. This is due to the technological innovations that continue to make computers cheaper and software packages more sophisticated. While there is no doubt that a revolution has occurred with graphic design being produced much more easily and rapidly and inexpensively then ever before, there is still debate in the graphic arts profession as to what constitutes "quality" graphic art. Some professionals feel that the technological marvels of this decade, while a boon to production in general, have caused even professional designers to become intellectual lazy. On the other hand, the software packages for graphic design continue to become more sophisticated and offer the opportunity for novice designers to learn more about the basics of good design and good typography. In short, this revolution is ongoing. However, as the following discussion of the graphic design field will illustrate, there is still a human component?ie human creativity?that cannot be replaced by computers or software, but is, nevertheless, not a component limited to big business.
