forgave my many errors in conduct due to my ignorance of their customs, for which I am very grateful, as I now prefer Utopian society to that of Europe; however, there were considerable adjustments involved in acclimating myself this society. For example, Utopian dress is extremely simple and utilitarian in function. Gold chains and finery are worn only by bondsmen, as punishment, as free citizens are not encumbered by their apparel (Bk. II). Pearls and precious stones are considered to be pretty plays things appropriate for children. I heard one children comment on a foreign ambassadors finery, saying, "Look, mother, how great a lubber doth yet wear pearls and previous stones, as though he were a little child still" (Bk. II). While Utopians can have their meals privately in their own homes, few of them choose to do so and most meals are taken communally. This is a pleasant affair, wherein the drudgery of preparation and cleanup is attended to by bondsmen and young people wait upon their elders. The victuals are plentiful, music is provided, and the talk is pleasant. An aspect of Utopian life that I find to be particularly enjoyable is the fact that no one works more than six hours per day, three hours in the morning and three hours in the afternoon. No one is except from this requirement, neither ministers nor magistrates nor any other form of government official. Most everyone is brought up to follow the craft practiced by his father, husbandry is required of the entire populace, and there is no leisure class, as such, rather everyone has plenty of leisure time as everyone works.
