a common complaint when an individual realizes s/he is not successfully conveying a point that s/he believes to be critical at the time. There is a difference in listening and hearing. 1. The Importance of Listening in Our Lives There are informational exchanges required in every aspect of daily life, and certainly we need to be able to listen to and understand those communications. They affect work, family and social relationships as no other single aspect of those relationships can. The ability to practice efficient and effective listening enables us to gain the information we need from the verbal exchanges around us, but it also opens other avenues of communication as well. If we can listen effectively without needing to be consciously aware of practicing the "how to" aspects of that listening, then we can be open to other forms of communication that occur at the same time. We can be more aware of gestures, inflection or facial expression, as example. Further, the ability to listen effectively to what is being said opens the way for insight into what is not being verbalized, but nonetheless is part of the total message the speaker is trying to deliver. 2. The Nature of Communication in Interpersonal Communication As stated above, there are other features of communication aside from verbal exchange of words. Interpersonal communication involves all of the tools that convey messages, whether the speaker (or hearer) is actively aware of their presence or not.
