as the polar bear pads silently to the water, looking for a seal. With remote at the ready, lest the scene turn bloody, you see that suddenly the polar bear whips out a bottle of Coca-Cola to offer to the little seal. Ahh, the pause that refreshes. How wonderful that one bottle of Coca-Cola can span cultures and world boundaries to make an instant friendship. This instant friendship does not extend between the two large cola titans, however. The Cola Wars. Weve all heard of them, and many of us have even taken the "Pepsi Challenge". Garnering a majority of the market share is, indeed, worthy of a full-scale war. That is the way it seems, at least in the opinions of two of the cola giants, Coca-Cola and Pepsi. With so much at stake, it has become a science to determine how to get the consumers attention, and ultimately, the consumers dollar. With two products that are so closely related in looks and taste, it would seem there couldnt be many different ways to market them. However, in examining the tactics used by Coca-Cola and Pepsi it is interesting to see the diverse strategy used to attract the attention of the customer. While one uses nostalgia, one uses the most contemporary icons. One is blue and one is red. One is the primary fountain drink in one restaurant, the other is the primary fountain drink in a different restaurant.
