LINKING THE VISUAL The obvious and most first-noted link between Gandhi, Satyahraha and Akhnaten are the same link that Philip Glass noted when he wrote his opera trilogy. Satyahraha is Philip Glass interpretation of Gandhi, so the obvious link is that the film Gandhi and the opera are of the same man. However, opera and film are two very different mediums. Akhnaten was also a man who "revolutionized religion" (Glass, 2002, PG) and he compares him, Gandhi and Einstein as the three men who most single-handedly revolutionized the world. So a similar bond connects these three pieces of art in that they depict people with a similar purpose. But their personalities and their lifes work is not what is so intriguing when comparing these three pieces. It is the artistic design element that runs concurrently through all three even though they are different mediums and three separate works. Interestingly enough, all three of them have the difficult task of spanning huge amounts of time into the small timeframe that the performance actually takes. It would seem that to incorporate so much history into so little time that these works would be awash with busyness, myriad sets, characters etc. It is actually the opposite that is true. These three works of art are distinct and beautiful in their minimalist appeal to the senses.
