The research topic for this study is: What are the positive and negative psychological and social impacts of casino gambling for the Ojibwas of Red Lake, MN? Specifically, the Native American communities of this region have a monopoly on the gambling industry, and so the social and psychological impacts of casino gambling relate directly to the substantive changes that have occurred for the Native Americans (the Ojibwas) in the midst of major social changes (Glago, 1994; Stuart, 1990). Since the late 1980s, changes to legislative limits on casino gambling authorized Native American nations to build casinos across the country. Some 31 states were allowed to build casinos on Native American lands, creating an impetus for economic change in regions struggling with socioeconomic decline (Wilson Quarterly, 1998). Though some have viewed the building of casinos on Native American lands a boon for reservation economies, others have argued that casinos have lead to compulsive gambling in populations least able to bear the impacts of gambling and others have suggested that gambling has lead to an increase in alcoholism, drug abuse, street crime and welfare dependency (Wilson Quarterly, 1998).
