some argue that there is no God and therefor no afterlife. Others argue that God exists and as such an afterlife exists as well. And, then there are those who do not necessarily believe in God, but do believe that there is a life after death. Bearing the possibilities in mind we present the following paper which examines what some noted minds have argued, or do argue. The individuals discussed are Antony Flew, P.T. Geach, C.J. Ducasse, Robert Almeder, and Plato. The paper ends with a discussion of whether or not there seems to be life after death. Flew In Antony Flews essay "Could We Survive Our Own Deaths?" written in 1998 Flew states that "Just because we can indeed understand hopes or fears of survival or immortality it does not follow that we can conceive, much less image, existence as persons, but disembodied.....the familiarity and intelligibility of talk about minds and about souls does entitle us to infer that we possess both a concept of mind and a concept of soul. But these particular semantic possessions are precisely not what is needed if doctrines of the survival and perhaps the immortality of souls or of minds are to be viable" (survival.html). Throughout this essay Flew is discussing how the individual, the personality, that is a human being is likely never to experience an afterlife. In this we see that Flew does not discard the possibility that an afterlife may exist, but he does illustrate that "who" we are will not exist and as such we can perhaps not begin to see what an afterlife may be.
