The BP Deepwater Horizon disaster of 2010 has been the largest manmade environmental disaster to date, as well as the cost inhuman lives there have also been the environmental and
economic costs. The event was initially portrayed as an accident, but as investigation took place it became apparent that the disaster was the result of a number of mistakes (Lyndon,
2011). The final report by the National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling (2011) stated that the cause was the result of management failures. BP
was not held alone, with management failures also attributed to Halliburton, and Transocean, it becomes apparent that leadership issues were relevant to the way the accident occurred. BP itself also
found themselves at fault in their own internal enquiry (Bates, 2010).To examine this it is necessary to look at the events and the way they occurred in order to identify
the leadership weaknesses and assess the way that the events should have been handled. In 2008 BP acquired the Macondo oil well, which was located 41 miles from the
Louisiana coast (Hoffman and Jennings, 2010). The disaster struck on 20 April 2010 during the development of the oil well, on the mobile offshore drilling rig located above this well,
called Deepwater Horizon when an explosion occurred as a result of methane gas running up the drilling column and igniting (Hoffman and Jennings, 2010). The result of the accident killed
