This type of "power structure" made up the earliest corporate structures as well (though brute strength wasnt considered a "must have" at that point). In this day and age, however, challenges facing corporations arent exactly life-and-death, meaning the roles of leadership have changed as well. Thus, there is some truth to the statement that "leadership will thus no longer focus on power, but on achievement." Grobler (1996) in his excellent article about the challenges facing business leaders in South Africa after apartheid pointed out that the leaders - and their organizations, for that matter, would need to move away from their "ocean of authoritarianism and bureaucratic hierarchies" (23). Most corporations in the South Africa of the mid-1990s were "overmanaged and underled." The key to any kind of success, he points out, involves the "devolution" of power and authority and flattening the organizational hierarchy (Grobler, 1996). Grobler definitely has a point here - organizations in which authority is delegated, rather than horded like a squirrel hordes nuts, tend to be organizations that are more responsive to the changing market place, changing competition and ever-changing customer needs. Grobler also points out, however, that actual determinants of leadership arent necessarily so clear-cut - though successful leadership does rely on aspects such as skills, traits, attitudes and intra-organizational conditions (Grobler, 1996). Close to a decade and a half after Grobler released his article, Thompson (2010) points to the fact that achievement-based leaders (whom he dubs "gentle" leaders) are needed in todays environment.
