Ed Exley, Bud White and Jack Vincennes are three very different cops who each want the glory of solving a murder. With a collective approach to crime but an individual convergence upon this particular murder, all three men put forth their own crime-solving techniques that serve to draw each one of them into question as to his value system and the manner in which he employs any ethical and moral application to solve this crime. Exleys motivation is to achieve at any cost, even when it calls for doing things against his or the departments ethical code. His golden boy status within the police force gives him a sense of superiority over the other law enforcement personnel, affording him an unspoken advantage to which no one else is privy. His desire to get ahead at any cost works in both a positive and negative direction for him, often causing his values to conflict with those of his own rendering, as well as those that society dictates.
