Information alone is not knowledge not all information will have value, the kept to knowledge management is to use information and intellectual resources, such as intellectual capital in order to create knowledge that can then be used. There is a great deal of information within a distribution company; there are extensive customer records with details of all transactions and communication history, there is mapping and route information, information about employees and information about the vehicles that are used and even details about the building. Not all this information has the potential to add value to the business. Knowledge management takes place by focusing on the information that can be leveraged. The knowledge management has seen tacit knowledge being transformed into explicit knowledge and explicit knowledge turned into tacit knowledge. Customer records are likely to be one area where there have been an opportunity to transform tacit knowledge of employees dealing with company customers into explicit knowledge that can be leveraged by the company. The records notes containing more than the transaction history, account managers can make notes in order to use knowledge to create more permanent customer relationships with the customers. The simple ability for an account manager to ask after a child or wife, or wish a customer happy birthday may not add immediate value to the company, but it is likely to help increase loyalty. In a distribution company there is likely to be the use of logistics programs including integration with satellite navigation systems.
